Interim Product Manager

Is that your current situation?

Need immediate full-time product leadership, but not ready for a permanent hire?

You’re in a situation where you need someone to step in, take ownership, and deliver results fast. Maybe your current Product Manager is on parental leave, you’ve lost a key leader, or a critical initiative is falling behind. This is where an interim Product Manager (PM) becomes one of your best options: Full-time engagement, clear deliverables, and no long-term commitment.

If you’ve searched for “interim Product Manager” or “interim PM,” you’re likely facing one of these scenarios:

  • A leadership gap due to sudden departure, leave of absence, or a long recruitment cycle.
  • A mission-critical initiative, like a new product launch or turnaround.
  • Organizational misalignment and process issues within the product team.
  • A scale-up phase requiring experienced leadership to stabilize and drive momentum.

TL;DR:

What Does a Interim Product Manager do?

An interim PM is a senior product professional who joins your team full-time for a limited time (typically 3–9 months). I don’t just consult—I take full ownership of product strategy, roadmap, team alignment, and execution.

Unlike fractional PMs, interim PMs are fully embedded and work alongside your teams on a day-to-day basis. The key difference: as an interim PM, I don’t just solve a specific product problem—I fully take on the role, operating across the entire bandwidth a permanent employee would cover, from strategy to execution, stakeholder alignment to delivery. In my case, I offer this service on a freelance/contract basis, not as a temporary employee.

Raimund is a perfect person when it comes to making things organised and well communicated. We worked together on two projects so far and I am looking forward for much more as this is all pleasure. He also keeps things very transparent for each side and has an ability to make others try as hard as possible to achieve a common target. I really recommend him as a Project or Product Manager.

Who Benefits from a Interim PM?

Key benefits of hiring a Interim PM

Real-world scenarios where an Interim Product Manager was hired:

  • Parental Leave Coverage: Took over full-time product leadership while the internal PM was on extended leave.
  • Strategic Relaunch: Rebuilt roadmap and product-market fit for a stalled SaaS platform.
  • Reviving a failing product: Due to a lack of product leadership, a mission-critical component of a startup was failing. I led the junior PO and successfully brought the product back on track.
  • Venture Spin-Off: Defined product strategy and MVP scope for a new unit within a corporate group.

Unstuck a delayed project

- a large software project of small SaaS Company - consisted of around a scrum team - had no scrum in place - JIRA used as a mix for tickets, roadmap, concepts and ideas - pressure for keeping the software running while adding new functionalities, while fighting tech dept and improving UX - never had a pref. PO / PM - "featurititis" with short term solution - stepped in as Fractional Product Owner - cleaned up JIRA use - created a roadmap - introduced step by step SCRUM, started with sprints - uncovered deeper problems with the product
